NGC 4945 is a barred spiral galaxy located in the Centaurus constellation.

It is seen by the slice which prevents us from observing its spiral arms without the use of special tools. It is comparable to our galaxy, the Milky Way, in size and characteristics, but NGC 4945 has in its center a very active bulb, supposed to be a supermassive black hole.

The discovery, in 1826, of this galaxy is attributed to the Scottish astronomer James Dunlop.

NGC 4945 is the closest galaxy to Earth, 13 million light-years, after the Andromeda galaxy.

On la voit par la tranche ce qui nous empêche d'observer ses bras spiraux, sans l'utilisation d'outils spéciaux. Elle est comparable à notre galaxie, la Voie Lactée, en dimension et caractéristiques, mais NGC 4945 possède en son centre un bulbe très actif, supposé être un trou noir supermassif.

La découverte, en 1826, de cette galaxie est attribuée à l'astronome écossais James Dunlop.

NGC 4945 est la galaxie la plus proche de la Terre, 13 millions d'années-lumière, après la galaxie d'Andromède.
